All plant-based fibre materials contain different amounts of alkaline earth and heavy metal ions depending on the area of cultivation.

In order to guarantee fault-free processing these must be removed from the substrate with sequestering agents through special processes such as de-mineralisation and/or use of sequestering agents in bleaching and washing processes.

Hardness components and heavy metal ions can, however, also enter the treatment bath via the process water, whereby sequestering agents must be deployed, with plant-based as well as often with synthetic fibre materials.

In addition, sequestering agents disperse the most varied pigment contaminations in the treatment bath and simplify their removal from the goods.
