At the beginning of a process, air is frequently trapped in the textile; this air must be removed from the fibre for optimum wetting with a treatment bath.

Furthermore, the insertion of air causes the formation of foam, especially with fast-running machines with high turbulence.

The surface tension between the treatment bath and the goods is reduced through the use of deaerators or defoamers and thus a spontaneous wetting of the material is achieved without foaming.
